What Is the Purpose of an Insulator?

Why insulated?

Rails are the main parts of the rail tracks. They lead the train and transfer the pressure of the wheels to the sleepers. It must have a continuous smooth surface with minimum resistance. Currently, in the electrified railways or automatic block zone, the two rails double as signal lines of track circuits and loop line for locomotive traction. So rails must be insulated in case of stray current interference. Usually, insulators and insulated rail joints are used in rail tracks.

Insulator cleaning

In wet weather conditions, dirty insulators are prone to flashover discharges, so they must be cleaned to restore the original insulation level. The general area is cleaned once a year and the dirty area is cleaned twice a year (once before the fog season).

1. Blackout cleaning

Blackout cleaning is in the line after the blackout workers boarding pole with a rag to wipe. If the wipe is not clean, available wet cloth wipe, can also use detergent scrubbing, if still scrubbing is not clean, should replace the insulator or change synthetic insulators.

2. Non-stop cleaning

Generally, insulators are rubbed on running lines using insulating poles equipped with brushes or tied with cotton yarn. The electrical properties and effective length of the insulating rod used, the distance between the person and the charged part, should be in accordance with the provisions of the corresponding voltage level, and the operation must be supervised by a person.

3. Electrically charged water flushing
